HUTCHINSON, KS—May 10, 2017—Vince Capone, the operations manager for the Apollo F-1 engine recovery project, will be speaking about the deep ocean search to recover the engines on May 18 at the Cosmosphere. All Capone’s presentations will take place in the Cosmosphere Banquet Room.
Capone will speak at 9 a.m. in a free public presentation as part of the monthly Coffee at the Cosmo event.
At a luncheon for Cosmosphere Corporate Partners and Corporate Members from 11:30 to 1, Capone will offer information about the growth of his business, Black Laser Learning, Inc., which trains marine-based businesses in the use of deep water recovery technology, as well as the Apollo engine recovery efforts.
Capone will conclude his day at the Cosmosphere with a presentation and reception for Cosmosphere members from 5:30 to 7 p.m.
The Cosmosphere’s fabrication, restoration + high-fidelity replica division was chosen to conserve the recovered F-1 engines in 2012. Currently the conserved thrust chamber, LOX dome and turbo pump from the Apollo 11 mission are on display at the Cosmosphere.
At 11 a.m. on May 20th, Cosmosphere member and well-known local poet, Carol Murray will offer a multi-media presentation and book reading of her new book of children’s poetry, Cricket in the Thicket as part of Cosmosphere’s Space Out Saturday activities. Murray has spent decades researching the book, which offers beautifully constructed poems about the peculiarities of a variety of insects. Murray will sign books after her presentation. Cricket in the Thicket is available for purchase in the Cosmosphere Cargo Bay Gift Store.
Other insect-themed activities during Space Out Saturday include Innovator’s Workshop presentations on butterflies that went to space. Participants can make their own butterfly astronauts at 10 a.m. and noon at the Innovator’s Workshop in the Cosmosphere lobby. And at 1 p.m., children and their families can enjoy Space Trek, the Space Out Saturday tour of the Hall of Space Museum specially designed to ignite the imagination of young visitors. Space Trek requires a Hall of Space admission ticket for visitors from outside of Reno County. All other Space Out Saturday activities are free of charge.
Just in time for Memorial Day weekend, a new documentary Aircraft Carrier: Guardians of the Sea, will premiere at the Cosmosphere. The giant screen format film explores the engineering and technology that make the modern U.S. nuclear carrier possible while providing a behind the scenes view of RIMPAC, the world’s largest and most comprehensive international maritime training exercise.
