HUTCHINSON, KS, Dec. 9, 2024 – The Cosmosphere, an internationally recognized space artifact collection and science education center, is excited to announce the appointment of six new members to its Boards of Directors. Three individuals will join the Governing Board, and three will serve on the Foundation Board. These distinguished individuals bring a wealth of experience, expertise, and passion to the organization, furthering its mission and commitment to inspiring the future through space exploration.
The new Foundation Board members include:
1. Lauren Bates, Director of Federal Affairs, Skyryse. Lauren brings over a decade of experience in federal affairs, complemented by her background in the private sector. At the Cosmosphere, she is excited to connect a global community of aerospace enthusiasts, fostering new partnerships and advancing the organization’s mission.
2. Jeff Dillon, Chief Operating Officer, VanTrust Real Estate, LLC. Jeff is a proud native of Hutchinson. His deep commitment to the vitality of his hometown is evident through his work on the Foundation Board. Jeff is dedicated to ensuring that future generations have the opportunity to experience the wonder of space at the Cosmosphere.
3. Gerald D. “Gerry” Griffin, former Director, NASA Lyndon B. Johnson Space Center; former Deputy Director, NASA John F. Kennedy Space Center. With a distinguished career as a NASA director, deputy director of multiple centers, and flight director during the Apollo program—including his pivotal role in the safe return of the Apollo 13 astronauts—Gerry’s contributions to space exploration are unparalleled. His deep involvement in the history of spaceflight offers a unique perspective on the significance of the Cosmosphere’s artifact collection, highlighting how the legacy of the past continues to inspire the future of space exploration.
The new Governing Board members include:
1. Miranda Konowitz, Chief Engineer, Textron Aviation. As a child, Miranda dreamed of becoming an astronaut. Today, her passion for aerospace fuels her dedication to mentoring the next generation, especially young women. She is excited to inspire others by supporting the growth of STEAM education programs at the Cosmosphere.
2. Rosemary Lesser, Head of Engineering, Airbus Americas Engineering. Rosemary is enthusiastic about her role with the Cosmosphere, seeing it as a unique opportunity to connect students with STEAM education. She looks forward to sharing her experiences and insights with the next generation of engineers and aerospace enthusiasts.
3. Tysen Pina, Department Head of Aviation, Kansas State University Salina. A retired U.S. Air Force veteran, Tysen brings over two decades of aviation experience to the Cosmosphere. He is dedicated to strengthening aerospace industry partnerships and fostering the development of future talent in the field.
These new appointees will play a key role in guiding the Cosmosphere as it expands its initiatives, strengthens its community relationships, and drives positive change for STEAM education and workforce development.

Their expertise will be instrumental in guiding the nonprofit’s strategic direction and ensuring continued success.
